Kishoreganj: Gangatia Jomidar Bari(গাংগাটিয়া জমিদার বাড়ী)

Saturday, 08 June 2013

Gangatia Jomidar Bari(গাংগাটিয়া জমিদার বাড়ী) is located at the Gangatia(গাংগাটিয়া) union of Hossenpur upozela(হোসেনপুর উপজেলা) from the Kishoreganj(কিশোরগঞ্জ) district. But it has a direct road from Kishoreganj town. I didn't know that and visited there via the Hossenpur Upozela(হোসেনপুর উপজেলা). It was almost reaching a place after having round a turn of 360 degree(for example a 20 minutes or road, but I have reached there using another one that required 80 minutes). But the countryside beauty of our Bangladesh enthralled me a lot during the ride.

This Jomidar Bari(জমিদার বাড়ী) is currently known as Manob Babur Bari(মানব বাবুর বাড়ী) as the current owner's name is Manab Babu(মানব বাবু) who is the last descendent of the Gangatia Jomidar(গাংগাটিয়া জমিদার). When I have reached there, it was around 12:00pm at the day. He was surprised as I was alone to visit there. He invited me to his Boithok Khana(বৈঠকখানা) and there we had a long chat on various topics. It was an wonderful moment and our time ran away within a blink. I wanted to prolong the conversation for another few hours, but unfortunately I had to cover other places and was running out of time. He has requested me to have a lunch with him as it was the lunch time when I was returning from there.

Manob Babu(মানব বাবু) has fisheries project near from his house. He also suggested me to have a visit on his project. But once again, I was running out of time. So couldn't visit those projects. While returning from there, he gave a driver and a motorbike with me so that I do not face any problem to find the shortest path while returning. His hospitality and the generosity impressed me a lot.

According to the Manob Babu(মানব বাবু), they are the possible smallest Jomidar(জমিদার) from the Bangladesh. He also mentioned that their forefathers came here from India, a Brahmin family(very strictly following Brahmin). During the war of 1971, the Pakistani armies and their Bangladeshi allies have done lot of damage to their house. Right now he is living there with his wife and sister. Neither he nor his brothers(all his brothers are passed away) have any children.

Gangatia Jomidar Bari(গাংগাটিয়া জমিদার বাড়ী) is mainly a small house that is having an array of Roman styled columns at the front. The architecture and the style of the building from the front side is amazingly beautiful. Very few travelers use to visit here. This Jomidar Bari(জমিদার বাড়ী) is a small one, but it has a massive boundary. The front door is also decorated and stylish. (গাংগাটিয়া জমিদার বাড়ী)

This one is built lastly. They use to live in this building.

How to Go:

Below is the shortest direction to visit the Gangatia Jomidar Bari(গাংগাটিয়া জমিদার বাড়ী).

1) Take a battery driven vehicle from the Bot toli(বটতলী) of Kishoreganj(কিশোরগঞ্জ) town. Its around 20 taka per person. It takes around 25 minutes to reach near Gangatia(গাংগাটিয়া). GPS Coordinate of the tempo stand is (24°26'29.65"N, 90°46'36.86"E). Dropping zone to leave the battery driven vehicle is (24°27'14.96"N, 90°42'8.58"E).

2) You'll find nothing here. So start walking by asking direction to the local people(10/12 minutes of walking). They know this as Manob Babur Bari(মানব বাবুর বাড়ী). GPS Coordinate of the Manob Babur Bari(মানব বাবুর বাড়ী) aka Gangatia Jomidar Bari(গাংগাটিয়া জমিদার বাড়ী) is (24°27'45.63"N, 90°42'11.82"E).

Most of the Hindu Jomidar Bari(জমিদার বাড়ী) from Bangladesh are in a very poor condition. That time the owners were facing difficulties for religious upheaval and other adverse situations, thus they have sensed an urgency to leave this country for their own safety. But fortunately, here they are still living with pride, may be they were too much friendly with the peasants.

Chittagong: Chhoto Darogar Hat Waterfall(ছোট দারোগার হাট ঝরনা)

Saturday, 06 July 2013

We have already visited few waterfalls yesterday and today. Yet still another one to visit, and other twos those we couldn't for shortage of time. This is about the Chhoto Darogar Hat Waterfall(ছোট দারোগার হাট ঝরনা). Also known as Shohosro Dhara Waterfall-2(সহস্র ধারা ঝরনা-২) as an irrigation project(the same name) was built using the water from the falls. Shohosro Dhara Waterfall-1(সহস্র ধারা ঝরনা-১) is located inside the Sitakunda(সীতাকুন্ড) Echo Park(that's another story). Most of my travel mates were tired and their nonchalant legs didn't want to move further, but their unyielding cravings for the waterfall pushed them forward in every such minutes.

It was inside the rainy season and a heavy showers from the sky is normal during this season. But very unlikely, it was another hot and humid day from my traveling. In fact, this year we had a very poor amount of rain in Bangladesh. It was somewhere around 2pm to 3pm at afternoon and we have started using a CNG driven vehicle that dropped us on a village road and we started our trekking from there.

It was very easy village path for trekking and having lot of trees at both sides for the shades. It was around half an hour of walking and we have reached near a water dam named Shohosro Dhara(সহস্র ধারা) Irrigation Project. It uses to barrier the water from the waterfall that we intended to visit. I expected it to be a dam full of water. But unfortunately it was totally empty, probably switch gates were all open.

The waterfall was very near from the irrigation project dam. Before visiting the waterfall, we have decided to visit the top of the waterfall. But unfortunately we didn't find the path to go there and directed to a wrong path, and traversed around two small hillocks. We found a view of another waterfall from that road and according to the local people, it was very tough(i didn't believe) to access. So we didn't make any attempt to explore that waterfall(also we didn't have enough time).

After doing all those Humpty Dumpty we have moved forward for the waterfall. We had around an hour of sitting there. During that time we had a shower under the waterfall. The water directly falls over a stone under the waterfall. That's why those water-drops use to hurt a lot(whenever I have tried to stand under there). It was a very wonderful moment to have a shower under the waterfall, having a sleep over the large rocks and observing the waterfall while laying flat.

Its basically a tall but slim waterfall having very less amount of water during any season. It use to have water in a large amount(but not violent) only during the rainy days. As soon as the rain is gone, the waterfall starts to get less flow of water.

How to Go:

In my opinion, Shohosro Dhara Waterfall-2(সহস্র ধারা ঝরনা-২) is a very easy to access waterfall from Bangladesh. Hardly a trekking of less than an hour requires to reach at the bottom of the waterfall. Also, it doesn't require to climb any hills or mountains those use to suck strength from the leg muscles.

1) First Come to the Chhoto Darogar Hat(ছোট দারোগার হাট) of Sitakunda Upazela(সীতাকুন্ড উপজেলা) of Chittagong district. GPS Coordinate of the place is (22°39'34.37"N, 91°38'8.14"E). You can come here by CNG driven vehicle or local bus services.

2) Start trekking directly from here. Or hire any CNG to drop you as much as possible near to the waterfall(its few minutes after crossing the rail line). Or, use your CNG at step(1) to drop you as much as that can.

3) After the dropping zone, start walking towards the waterfall. Its only a single road to walk. If you face any doubt, ask local people for the assistance. The GPS Coordinate of the Shohosro Dhara Waterfall-2(সহস্র ধারা ঝরনা-২) is (22°40'23.85"N, 91°39'32.43"E).

This leads towards the irrigation project. Its at the other side.

A view from the top of the irrigation project. This meandered stream comes directly from the waterfall which is very near from here.

Hard working people are caring bamboo sticks to the market. They have collected those from the deep inside of hills.

View of the waterfall from the far. Our first sight of the waterfall.

We have trekked on a wrong trail like this one for half an hour.

One of my fellow trekking mate is on his course, through the lash green.

A view of an unknown waterfall at far sight.

A closer look towards the waterfall.

More closer view. Water is falling over the inclined rocks from the hill. Very tough to access according to the locals.

Another view of the waterfall, we were almost closer to it.

A beautiful view of the jhiri(ঝিরি).

Best view o the waterfall as per my observation.

Chhoto Darogar Hat Waterfall(ছোট দারোগার হাট ঝরনা)

We had a shower here. The water just slapped on our back mercilessly.

Resting over a big flat rock and enjoying the beauty of the waterfall.

Naogaon: Dubolhati Jomidar Bari(দুবলহাটি জমিদার বাড়ী)

Saturday, 18 May 2013

Dubolhati Jomidar Bari(দুবলহাটি জমিদার বাড়ী) is located at the Dubolhati(দুবলহাটি) union of Naogaon(নওগাঁ) district. This is around a 200 years of old building. Compare to the other Jomidar Bari(জমিদার বাড়ী) from Bangladesh, this one is a massive one. But unfortunately the condition of this once upon luxurious compound is very poor. The dilapidated condition of this palace gave me a feelings of a war torn building that can collapse in any moment.

Dubolhati Jomidari(দুবলহাটি জমিদারী) was established by the Jomidar Kirshnanath(জমিদার কৃষ্ণনাথ) from the East India Company(the British ruler of this region). The Jomidar(জমিদার) of Dubolhati(দুবলহাটি) was very cruel for the peasants. Similar to the other Jomidar(জমিদার) of Bangladesh, people couldn't cross this Jomidar bari(জমিদার বাড়ী) premise by wearing any shoes or using umbrella. That's why suffering local people revolted against the Jomidar(জমিদার).

The Department of Archaeology of Bangladesh has taken the custody of this building, but later they didn't do anything to preserve this(may be they have forgotten about it). Now a days its a perfect place for the drug addicts and similar people. Though they do not do any harm to the visitors, but still it hinders the free movement of a traveler for sure.

The doors and windows from all the buildings are missing. even people started to removing the bricks from the walls too. These poor buildings can collapse in any day if the shake of an earthquake is mild enough. Climbing to the second floor of the buildings are very much risky.

I have found several yards inside the Dobolhati Jomidar Bari(দুবলহাটি জমিদার বাড়ী) compound. Most of the buildings are built in a group and also in different times. At the corner of the premise I have found a water well(কুয়া) that used to serve the need of drinking water.

How to Go:

Dubolhati Jomidar Bari(দুবলহাটি জমিদার বাড়ী) is located at the Dubolhati(দুবলহাটি) union of Naogaon Sodor Upazela(নওগাঁ সদর উপজেলা). We have gone there after visiting the Bolihar Jomidar Bari. and returned back using another way. So basically there are two routes to visit the Jomidar Bari(জমিদার বাড়ী). One is shortest route, and other one is the longest route. Either one will be useful for you.

Shortest route:

1) From the Naoga(নওগাঁ সদর) town take a Van or Battery driven vehicle to come at the Dubolhati bazaar(দুবলহাটি বাজার). For a van its 20/25 taka per person. And for the battery driven vehicle its 15 taka per person. Battery driven vehicle requires around 20 minutes to reach the Dubolhati bazaar(দুবলহাটি বাজার).

Longest route:

This one will be helpful for you if you come here after visiting the Kushumba mosque or Bolihar Jomidar Bari.

1) Come to the Hapania Bazaar(হাপানিয়া বাজার) first. Its on the Manda-Naogao(মান্দা-নওগাঁ) highway. GPS Coordinate of the Hapania bazaar(হাপানিয়া বাজার) is (24°51'18.26"N, 88°53'11.92"E).

2) Take a local Votvoti(ভটভটি), a very noisy local vehicle to come to the Dubolhati(দুবলহাটি) Bazaar. It is 15 taka per person and around 20-25 minutes of ride.

From the bazaar, just start walking to reach the Jomidar Bari(জমিদার বাড়ী). Its around a minute of walking distance. Ask local people if you find any difficulties to locate it. GPS Coordinate of the Dubolhati Jomidar Bari(দুবলহাটি জমিদার বাড়ী) is (24°47'12.26"N, 88°52'59.37"E).

I have used the longest route to reach near the Dubolhati(দুবলহাটি), and return back to the Naoga(নওগাঁ সদর) town using the shortest route.

Front side building of the Jomidar Bari(জমিদার বাড়ী).

This image tells that no care is being taken for this building. Homeless people are living here with risking their life.

Photoshop edited. This is probably a watch tower placed at the corner of the building.

A window at the roadside. I always feel nostalgic by watching such windows. I always feel someone from the past is still watching me.

View of the Dubolhati Jomidar Bari(দুবলহাটি জমিদার বাড়ী) from the other side of the Pond. It has two small temples near at the stairs of the pond.

Another Mughal(মুঘল) style watch tower.

Only the roman styled pillars are standing and the walls are missing.

A closer look towards the dilapidated condition of a building.

Its not the poor but the hideous people have stolen the stuffs from here and made these buildings nude like this one.

Even now a days people are started to removing the bricks from here too.

All the windows and doors those were made from heavy woods are missing.

Inner yard and the poor building. I believe the conservative woman of that time from this palace use to move here freely. May be I can hear their laughing still now!

Cruel ruler is gone, and now it's living place is waiting to pass away.

From my observation, only this building is available to climb at second floor and having the best condition amongst all.
