Comilla: Jogonnath Dev Mondir(জগন্নথ দেব মন্দির)

Sunday, 17 March 2013

It was the last day of our three day's tour. In fact we have traveled most of the list from our bucket at previous two days. We had only few for today and the Jogonnath Mondir(জগন্নথ মন্দির) was the last place that we have visited for this expedition.

This is probably the oldest Temple from Comilla(কুমিল্লা) district. It was built by the King of Tripura(ত্রিপুরা) named 'Moharaja Rada Kishor Manikuo Bahadur' during the 16th century. This temple worship the god Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra. Statue of those gods were initially placed at the temple of Tripura(ত্রিপুরা), but later those were shifted here.

Wikipedia mentioned this as Saptratna Mondir(সপ্তরত্ন মন্দির) whereas the travel book writer Mustafiz Mamun has introduced this as Sotero Rotno Mondir(সতের রত্নের মন্দির). I am not sure which one is correct but the temple seems unique to me considering the other temples from Bangladesh.

How to Go:

This Dev Jogonnath(জগন্নথ দেব) temple is located mainly at the Bibir Bazar(বিবির বাজার) of Jogonnathpur(জগন্নথপুর) which is 5 kilometer East from the Comilla(কুমিল্লা) town. First come to the Chawk Bazar(চক বাজার) at Comilla(কুমিল্লা) town. From there you can take Battery driven auto vehicle which costs 10 taka per person. It will be around 15 minutes of journey.

GPS coordinate of the Jogonnath Dev(জগন্নথ দেব) Temple is (23°27'43.97"N, 91°12'39.24"E).

A corridor to enter inside where the stuffs of the temple use to live.

Not sure, statue of Gorur(গরূঢ়)?

Bandhuli Ful (বান্ধুলী ফুল) - Pentapetes phoenicea

Common Name : Noon Flower, Copper Cups, etc.
Bengali Name : Dupurmoni(দুপুরমনি), Bandhuli(বান্ধুলী), Bondhuk(বন্ধুক).
Botanical Name : Pentapetes phoenicea
Family : Malvaceae(Mallow family)

Name of this attractive colored flower is Dupurmoni(দুপুর মনি ফুল) in our country Bangladesh. It is also known as Bandhuli ful(বান্ধুলী ফুল), Bandhuk ful(বন্ধুক ফুল), etc. Common names are Copper Cups, Noon flower, Scarlet Mallow, etc. Botanical name is Pentapetes phoenicea and it belongs to the family Malvaceae.

Dupurmoni is mainly a semi-woody annual herb plant that can grow up to a meter in height. Toothed leafs are liner and alternately arranged around the stem. Some part of the stems, bracts, and the bottom side of the leafs are hairy. This causes irritation to the skin when comes in contact.

Flowers are Scarlet in color, blooms during the noon, and closes during dawn. This is the reason for calling it as Dupurmoni(দুপুর মনি) in Bangladesh. It means The Pearl of the Noon. Flowers use to come from the axils of the leaf and the stem. It uses to hang downwards at the plant. Scarlet Mallow has five petals which can be faded red or white sometimes. It doesn't have any fragrance.

This flowering plant is marked as weed(not invasive) around rice fields. Otherwise its an attractive ornamental flower.

Photos of this article were taken from Naogaon(নওগাঁ) district of Bangladesh during my travel at May 2013. I didn't pluck any flower from the plant. I have just bended the stem to get a better view of the flower.

Feni: Pagla Miyar Mazar(পাগলা মিঞাঁর মাজার)

Friday, 15 March 2013

Feni(ফেনী) is a very small district from Bangladesh and it has very few things to explore from the main town. If you have time while staying at Feni(ফেনী), you can visit this Pagla Miar Mazar(পাগলা মিঞাঁর মাজার). Though it is named as Pagla Miyar Mazar(পাগলা মিঞাঁর মাজার), but the original name of him was Saiyad Amir Uddin(সৈয়দ আমীর উদ্দিন). He was born in 1823 at village Chholua(ছনুয়া) of Fazilpur(ফাযিলপুর) and died at 1887.

This place is at Takia(তাকিয়া) road of the Feni(ফেনী) town which is very near from the Feni Zero point. You can have a stroll around the streets inside the market, or can have a rickshaw to reach near this place. Local people know this as Takia Mosque(তাকিয়া মসজিদ). Main attraction of the Mazar(মাজার) is the ornate dome at the top of it.

GPS Coordinate of the place is (23° 0'25.53"N, 91°23'51.52"E).

Tangail: Nawabbari Mosque of Dhonbari

Friday, 22 March 2013

Last time I have written an article about the NawabBari of Dhonbari, Tangail(ধনবাড়ী নওয়াব বাড়ী, টাঙ্গাইল). This time its about the mosque which is exactly beside that royal palace. This mosque is built at the outside of the Nawab Manzil(নবাব মনজিল) premise, so that local people can access it during their prayer time.

Initially it was an old fashioned three domes mosque similar to the other ancient mosques from Bangladesh. But later this mosque was extended to accommodate more people. Extended part is having 10/12 minarets at top which are similar to Persian design. This extension with the old fashioned mosque made it a hybrid looking mosque. Not enough antiquities are left now a days.

But still, you'll love to see this mosque. Its neat and clean everywhere. Apart from the mosque, there are few micro edifices are available around the mosque. I am not sure what are those.

There are few old graves available at the graveyard which is at the western side of the mosque. Since 1929, after the death of Nawab Ali Choudhury(নবাব আলী চৌধুরী) the Holy Qur'an has been recited continually beside his grave.

How to Go:

I have written detail about this at my another article of Dhonbari Jomidar Bari(ধনবাড়ী জমিদার বাড়ী). Please read the article in detail for this.

For your information once again, this mosque is located at the Dhonbari(ধনবাড়ী) of Tangail(টাংগাইল) District. GPS Coordinate of the Nawab Bari Mosque(নওয়াব বাড়ী মসজিদ) is (24°40'30.16"N, 89°57'18.63"E).

Back side of the mosque. It was the initial mosque before extension.

Few graves at the southern side of the mosque.

Graves of the Nawab Family.

A Dighi(দিঘী) is available at the eastern side of the mosque.

This is the new look, or you can say extension.

Inside the mosque.

I don't know what it is, but it also looks nice.

Lichu Ful(লিচু ফুল) - Litchi chinensis

Common Name : Lichu, Lychee, Lichee, etc.
Bengali Name : Lichu(লিচু ফুল).
Botanical Name : Litchi chinensis
Family : Sapindaceae(Soapberry family)

Lychee is a delicious pulpy fragrant fruit that is available in our country Bangladesh. This is mainly native to China, but somehow our country adopted this delicate fruit and now it is also native to Bangladesh along with south and southeast Asia. Botanical name of Lychee is Litchi chinensis and it belongs to the family Sapindaceae. In Bangladesh we call this as Lichu(লিচু).

Lichu(ফুল) is a very slow growing evergreen plant that can grow between 30 to 100 ft in height. Leafs are dark green and elliptic, lance, etc shaped and the bark is grey black in color.

Lichu(লিচু ফুল) flowers are very interesting. Flowers use to bloom as a cluster and each tinny little flower from the cluster is petal-less. It has five very long(compare to flower's size) stamens which are having a filament atop. Color of the filament can vary in different regions. Color of the Lichee flower is creamy, yellowish white, greenish white, etc.

A Lichu garden from Dinajpur district of Bangladesh.

Succulent Lichee fruits are juicy and pulpy inside. Its small and almost a round shaped ball. Last 10 days from the month May and first week of the month June is the best time to enjoy the best quality Lichees from Bangladesh. It has a very short period at fruit market compare to other native fruits from our country.

Flowers for this article were taken from Tangail(টাংগাইল) district during March 2013. Photos of the garden and the fruits were taken from Dinajpur(দিনাজপুর) district during May 2010.

Joypurhat: Baro Shibaloy Mondir(বার শিবালয় মন্দির)

Friday, 17 May 2013

Baro Shibaloy(বার শিবালয়) is an unique temple that is located beside the Chhoto Jomuna river(ছোট য্মুনা নদী) of Bel-Amla(বেল-আমলা) village which is around 4 kilometer apart from the Joypurhat(জয়্পুরহাট) District of Bangladesh. I haven't heard/seen anything even near similar to this temple before. This temple compound has 12 temples and each of those are having almost an identical phallus of Lord Shiva. It could have been a tourist pulling site from Bangladesh, but Alas! only the enthusiastic travelers like us or the pious people visit this temple. It still remains hidden to the foreign travelers as well as the locals.

The name Baro Shibaloy(বারো শিবালয়) means 12 houses of Lord Shiva. A rich Hindu person named Rijiblochon Mondol(রাজিবলোচন মন্ডল) built this unique temple at the beginning of 19th century. These temples are arranged on the four sides of a Rectangle where each side of the rectangle contains 4 Shiva temples, and the temples at the corner of the rectangle is shared between two sides. In total 12 temples.

There is another temple available inside the compound that worships the goddess Kali. A large banyan tree is available outside the temple compound. A two days of fair use to held here during the Shib Choturdoshi(শিব চতুর্দশী) of the Bengali month Falgun(ফাল্গুন). Also the Hindu believers use to take a bath at the river beside the temple for purification of both body and soul.

How to Go:

After visiting the Lokma Jomidar Bari, we have boarded on a local bus for Joypurhat(জয়্পুরহাট) town from the Pachbibi(পাচবিবি) bazaar. Using the bus service(8 taka per person) we got down at the Godon Shohor(গদন শহর) stoppage. From there we have hired a van to drop us at the Baro Shivalay Mondir(বার শিবালয় মন্দির). It was around 10/12 minutes of van ride and 30 taka was the van fare.

There are several ways to come at the Baro Shibaloy Mondir(বারো শিবালয় মন্দির) from Joypurhat(জয়্পুরহাট) town.

1) Using tomtom or a similar vehicle you can easily come near to the temple. Make sure you are hiring the vehicle for a round trip. Otherwise you'll discover yourself at the middle of nowhere while returning.

2) Another option can be, come to the Mishon Mor(মিশন মোড়) from the Joypurhat(জয়্পুরহাট) town. From there take any van or battery driven vehicle to reach near to the temple. GPS coordinate of Mishon Mor(মিশন মোড়) is (25° 6'20.26"N, 89° 0'1.16"E).

3) Third option can be the route through Godon Shohor(গদন শহর) that we have used. GPS coordinate of the Godon Shohor(গদন শহর) bus stoppage is (25° 8'34.18"N, 89° 1'22.77"E).

GPS coordinate of the Baro Shivalay(বার শিবালয়) Temple is temple is (25° 7'53.27"N, 89° 0'57.37"E).
