Common Name : Scarlet Flame Bean, Brownea.
Bengali Name : Pakhi Ful(পাখি ফুল).
Botanical Name : Brownea coccinea
Synonym Name : Brownea latifolia
Family : Caesalpiniaceae

Comilla: Chondi Mura Mondir(চন্ডি মুড়া মন্দির)

Saturday, 16 March 2013

Most of the tourist spots are somewhere around the other side of Shalbon Bihar(শালবন বিহার) of Comilla(কুমিল্লা). But this small temple is quite isolated from those places. This is at the southern end of the Lalmai Hill(লালমাই পাহাড়). That's why mostly the devoted people use to go here. Very few tourists like us use to go there.

This temple is located at the top of a hillock and you have to climb there using the stairs. Its tiresome to reach at the top. But don't worry, you'll have the whole stairs is covered with evergreen trees. And at any stages, you can have a break by supporting your body on the railing of the stairs. You can see a long distance from there as you have already climbed a few.

The temple premise is mainly having two temples. Each of those are having two small compartments are joined together(considered as single one). Left side temple is the Shiv Mondir(শিব মন্দির) and the right side temple is Chondi Mondir(চন্ডি মন্দির).

We went there from Laksham(লাকসাম) and after visiting, we have headed towards the Moynamoti(ময়নামতি) through the Poduar Bazar(পদুয়ার বাজার). We have used local bus services through out this journey to save money.

How to Go:

First you have to come at the Lalmai Bazar(লালমাই বাজার). From the bazaar, its 10 taka auto rickshaw fare for each person. GPS of the temple is (23°21'9.62"N, 91° 7'52.42"E).

There is a bus(Bolaka, বলাকা) use to run through a road which is exactly beside the temple. You can take that bus from the Poduar Bazar(পদুয়ার বাজার) of Comilla Bishwa road(কুমিল্লা বিশ্ব রোড). Its 15 taka per person and around 15 minutes of bus ride.

Kath Badam Ful (কাঠ বাদাম ফুল) - Terminalia catappa

Common Name : Bengal almond, Sea almond, etc.
Bengali Name : Kath Badam Ful (কাঠ বাদাম ফুল).
Botanical Name : Terminalia catappa
Synonym : Terminalia procera Roxb
Family : Combretaceae

Kath Badam (কাঠ বাদাম) is a lash green small to medium sized tree but it's deciduous. This is native to Asian territory. Botanical name is Terminalia catappa from the plant family Combretaceae. We call this as Kath Badam (কাঠ বাদাম) in Bangladesh (বাংলাদেশ). Common name is Green Field Almond, Sea Almond, Bengal Almond, Indian Almond, etc.

This is mainly a 'single stem' plant which is having a pagoda shaped and having multiple layers in between. Leathery glossy Leafs are broad, oval shaped and upper side is dark green and bottom side is slight pale. Before the winter, the plant totally sheds its leafs. Before the shedding, the leafs use to turn into brown/orange/red in color which looks gorgeous that time. During spring, the tree starts to bring new leafs and covers the whole tree with mature leafs within 2/3 days at max. It's a very fast growing tree.

Flowers are very small and use to come as a cluster around a raceme. Petal-less tinny flowers are having a showy bract that resembles the petal and has a star shape. Same raceme holds both the male and female flowers. Most of the male flowers use to be at the top of the raceme and the female flowers are at the lower side. Fruits are having a size of a golf ball but its elliptical or oval in shaped. Small fleshy portion of the fruit is covered with a hard cork like otter shell.

A closer look to the flower.

This tree looks beautiful for it's layered architecture. That's why you'll see this plant plenty at the parks or yards. Also its a shade providing plant as it is dense with broad leafs.

We had a break under this tree as we were tired by walking mile after mile near Mohuri (মহুরী).

Bengali Name : Neel Moni Lota Ful(নীলমণি লতা ফুল).
Botanical Name : Petrea volubilis
Synonym : Petrea racemosa, Petrea erecta.
Family : Verbenaceae

This is a strikingly beautiful cluster flower which is native to the tropical America. Botanical name is Petrea volubilis from the plant family Verbenaceae. Common names of the flower are Purple Wreath, Queen's Wreath, Sandpaper Vine, etc. In our country Bangladesh(বাংলাদেশ) we call this as Neel Moni Lota Ful(নীলমণি লতা ফুল). This name was given by the legendary poet Rabindranath Tagore(রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর).

Though it looks like a flower, but still its not. Its simply a bract.

This is a very fast growing shrubby twining climber vine. Leafs are rough green(that's why called as sandpaper vine). This plant can be mounted on fence, trellis, or over a simple tree. This is an easy to grow plant. But it requires full sunshine for growth and flower blooming.

Flowers use to come in a raceme and can be a foot long in length. Small flowers are purple, light blue, violet, mauve in color. Flowers are having two parts. Inner one is the small flower having five petals and color is darker. Outer one is mainly a bract or sepal but that one looks similar to a flower. It's color is much lighter than the flower. Flower use to last for a day or two, but that bract use to last for several days(though color use to faded slowly).
