Bengali Name : সালপানি ফুল, দীর্ঘ মূলী ফুল
Common Name : Ticktree, Sal Leaved Desmodium.
Botanical Name : Desmodium gangeticum
Synonym : D. maculatum, Hedysarum gangeticum
Family : Fabaceae(Pea family)

This is a lovely weed flower from the family Fabaceae. It's botanical name is Desmodium gangeticum. This is widely seen around the bushes of our country Bangladesh(বাংলাদেশ). Locally we call this Salpani Ful(সালপানি ফুল). English people know this as Ticktree flower.

This is a small plant and woody near the bottom, but still its a perennial herb plant. Leafs are ovate or oblong having an acute tip. Leafs are not glossy. This tree brings lot of long vine-like racemes which sometimes can trick you to trust the plant as a vine.

A small plant with lot of racemes.

Flowers are very similar to the other flowers from the Pea family, blooms around the long racemes. But these are slight smaller and not that much showy. You need to observe carefully to detect the presence of this flower(especially when its around the bushes). Based on the region, the flower can be in different colors(white, red, purple, mauve, etc).

A different kind of seedpod from the flower.

Fruits of this plant are are very interesting in term of shapes. A small flat seedpod having 8-10 semi round seeds which are connected like teeth at gum. In My childhood, I have seen this seeds a lot near our house. I might have forgotten the flowers, but still can remember the unusual looking seeds.

Though its a weed and unwanted plant, but like other plants in nature, it has few medicinal uses. It's main use is against the colonic treatments and coughs(Whooping Coughs). People from Malaysia use the leafs of this plant to sooth headache and the roots to cure toothache.

Garden Croton(পাতা বাহার) - Codiaeum variegatum

Bengali Name : পাতা বাহার, Pata Bahar.
Common Name : Croton, Garden Croton, etc
Botanical Name : Codiaeum variegatum
Family : Euphorbiaceae

This is a different ornamental plant that is only cherished for it's lovely foliage. In Bangladesh we call this as Pata Bahar(পাতা বাহার), which means 'beautiful leafs'. English people call this as Garden Croton. Botanical name of the plant is Codiaeum variegatum and it is a member of the family Euphorbiaceae.

This is a small sized evergreen shrub with colorful broad leathery leafs. It can be in various colors(green, yellow, red, pink, orange, etc) and shapes. Basically those colors are the reason of forceful selection and bred(cultivars). Now a days there hundreds of such cultivars are available. This evergreen plant can not sustain cold weather and starts loosing the leafs. This plant can be easily propagated by the stem of the plant.

I have never seen flowers from this plant yet. But this plant also bring flowers(male and female are different) like other plants.

The white sap from the plant can cause skin eczema. Also it can be poisonous when ingested. But still, this plant has few medicinal uses.

White Powder Puff - Calliandra haematocephala Alba

Common Name : White Powder Puff
Botanical Name : Calliandra haematocephala 'Alba'
Family : Mimosaceae(Touch-me-not family)

Botanical name is Calliandra haematocephala 'Alba'. It pertains to the plant family Mimosaceae. This is a foreign flower but I found it a yard of a house. It doesn't have any Bengali(বাংলা) name. Common name is White Powder Puff flower. It is native to Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, etc countries. But we have lot of other plants from the same genus which are commonly known as rain-tree in Bangladesh(বাংলাদেশ).

This flower is delicately beautiful alike others from the same flowering genus Calliandra. Calliandra actually means beautiful stamens. And its true, the flower has a lot of puff like silky stamens, in fact no petals. All those puffs form a shape of a ball and gives the flower an exotic look. This flower is favorite to the hummingbirds, also sometimes to the butterflies. Color of this flower is white, but at another variant, it can be red/rosy.

This is an small sized plant and can grow up to 4 meter in height. Its an evergreen tree and grows very fast. Leaflets are having an array of small leafs at the both sides. Also the leafs are used to close during night. This tree brings flower during winter and spring season.

Bengali Name : Bhutraj, ভূত রাজ
Common Name : Maidenhair Creeper
Botanical Name : Lygodium flexuosum
Synonym : Ophioglossum flexuosum
Family : Lygodiaceae

Its a perennial fern plant, which means it doesn't have any flower. It's common name is Maidenhair Creeper. But in Bangladesh and West Bengal of India, this is know as Bhutraj(ভূতরাজ). In our country, this is mostly seen creeping around the wall of abandoned houses, or creeping on a tree, etc. Botanical name of this fern is Lygodium flexuosum. Dwarf Ophiorrhiza(জারি ফুল) - Ophiorrhiza harrisiana

Bengali Name : Jari Ful(জারি ফুল), Kalashona(কালা সোনা)
Common Name : Dwarf Ophiorrhiza
Botanical Name : Ophiorrhiza harrisiana
Synonym : O. rugosa, O. prostrata, Virecta prostrata
Family : Rubiaceae(Coffee family)

In Bangladesh, this wild flower is only seen at the hilly areas and specially under the shades of large trees or something like that. Botanical name is Ophiorrhiza harrisiana and it belongs to the plant family Rubiaceae. Since this flower is mainly seen at our hilly areas, it has only few tribal names like Jari Ful(জারি ফুল), Kalashona(কালা সোনা), etc.

This is an evergreen small perennial herb plant but to me it looks like a baby plant. I think the leafs are the reason for it's such appearance. Corrugated paired leafs are having variable shapes and lengths even in a single plant, for example, larger elliptical to small ovate shape.

Plant grows under a shade of a larger tree.

Flower are very small, milky white in color, having a shape of a bell and blooms as a cluster. It has five small petals over the small tube/funnel that emerges after the bracts.

Most of the plants from the genus Ophiorrhiza are highly used in medicines. They mainly contain camptothecin alkaloids which is being used to make the agents for Chemotherapy. Aboriginal Chakma(চাকমা) people from Bangladesh were using the extract of roots to cure the dysentery. Another tribe named Marma(মারমা) were using the Leaf's Tea to sooth the body and chest pain since ancient time.

Photos of this article were taken from Khagrachhori(খাগড়াছড়ি) during the rainy season(July) of 2012. It was beside a wide stream and under a large tree.
