A mysterious waterway.

After deciding this short tour of Sijuk Waterfall(সিজুক ঝরনা), I have formed a team comprising three ebullient members. Despite of poor road condition and other hectic factors, the bus dropped us at Khagrachhori(খাগড়াছড়ি) town by 8:00 at morning. Though I was prepared to reach by 10:00 at morning. So I got an unwanted advantage of two hours. After a quick breakfast we have started for Dighinala(দীঘিনালা) using CNG auto rickshaw. It actually costs 500 taka, but after a bargaining we have managed it by 450 taka.

A deep watery path like this one will be on your way.

By that time I have also contacted with our guide Moni Chakma(মনি চাকমা) who is also a bike rider. While he was waiting for us at Dighinala(দীঘিনালা), by that time we were enjoying the exquisite beauty beside the road from the vehicle. We have reached at Dighinala(দীঘিনালা) at 10:00 of morning, and without wasting any time we have started for Nondoram(নন্দরাম) village using two bikes. We were Two bike riders, guide Moni Chakma(মনি চাকমা), and three of us. By the way we have fixed both the bikes for 1600 taka(800 each) + 200 taka, and also they will be accompanying us throughout the single day tour.

We have reached Nondoram(নন্দরাম) village by 11:00 at morning. The village is beside the river Kasalong(কাসালং). I have heard name of the river, but never had a chance to visit. This village is actually located at the Sajek union of Rangamati(সাজেক, রাঙামাটি). Before this village an Army cam is available on the way. travelers must entry their names to that camp.

First view of the waterfall.

After changing the dresses at a tea stall from village we have started for trekking through the hillocks of Rangamati(রাঙামাটি). We had our guide Moni Chakma(মনি চাকমা) and another bike riders. Other one was lazy and stayed behind for a nap. It was an extreme hot day without any wind. But in spite of the tiring trekking, we have trekked for a continuum one hour and reached to the Sijuk Canal(সিজুক খাল/সিজুক ছড়া).

Some tribal people pronounce this canal as Shishuk khal(শিশুক খাল). The canal is formed after joining two mighty streams. The two waterfalls are located at those two streams. We have explored the left side stream first(furthest) and the right side(nearest) stream later. But still I'm writing here the nearest one first.

It was actually around a half an hour of strolling against the flow of the stream. The level of the water was having an average height of 3-4 ft. But at some points the water level was near 6 ft. Also the canal is totally covered with dark forest. Sometime the ambient was kind of scary to me.

As the depth of the water was very high, the flow of the water was less. Lot of rotten leafs are available on the water. At some places the mud under the water produce gasses with bad odors with bubbles when got pressed by feet.

The more we were progressing, the more we were welcoming by the Hati Poka(হাতি পোকা). Trust me, those microscopic insect bite can cause hell lot of pains. Wasps and scary looking mosquitoes were there too. To add misery, I found some leafs were stingy. A soft brushing those leafs with arm caused us inflammation.

After passing through such hideous things we have finally reached near to the waterfall. We could hear the roaring sound of the waterfall but could not see that. That portion of the Jhiri(ঝিরি) was covered with large rocks. All of the rocks were covered with mosses and ferns. Those are the best hideout for snakes and other reptiles. Also crossing those stones were not easy.

After jumping and bumping through rocks we have finally reached in front of the Sijuk waterfall. It was having mighty water flow. Shorter than other one, but mightier than other one. Recently at August 15/16 of 2012, two tribal sisters came to collect snails from the Jhiri(ঝিরি). But unfortunately one of those poor tribal slipped from the waterfall. Her name was Champa Chakma(চম্পা চাকমা). To rescue her, the elder sister of that girl has also fallen from the waterfall. Thus the death embraced both of them. We'll all die someday. But accidental death is not expected anymore. I can only pray to my God for taking a good care of those girls who are now living at the other world.

Sorry for forcing you read that sad story. Anyway, the weather was gloomy due to dark clouds on the sky(Though it didn't rain fortunately). When we have returned back to the Sijuk Canal(সিজুক খাল), it was 5:00 at afternoon. Read next article to know how we have returned back to Dhaka.

How to Go:

In short, first go to Dighinala of Khagrachhori(দীঘিনালা, খাগড়াছড়ি). From there hire bikes to reach at Nondoram(নন্দরাম) village. Each bike will cost 700-800 taka for whole day. From Nondoram(নন্দরাম) village, hire any local people to show you the path. They may cost you around 200 taka. If they do not know about the Sijuk Jhorna(সিজুক ঝরনা), just tell them about the Sijuk Khal(সিজুক খাল/সিজুক ছড়া), and the waterfall on that khal(খাল).

Also, if you can find the Moni Chakma(মনি চাকমা) from the Dighinala(দীঘিনালা), that case you'll not require any guides. He knows the Sijuk waterfalls(সিজুক ঝরনা) pretty well. You can use his bike to ride, and use him as guide as compliment. I have contact number of Moni Chakma(মনি চাকমা), if you need, just let me know your email address.

A rough sketch about the location of the falls.

Note:

This Sijuk Jhorna(সিজুক ঝরনা) is located at Rangamati(রাঙামাটি) district. But for easier access you have to use Dighinala of Khagrachhori(দীঘিনালা, খাগড়াছড়ি).
