Golden Dew Drop - Duranta erecta

Share at Facebook

First time I have seen this beautiful garden flower at Rangamati(রাঙামাটি) where people are using this plant widely at their gardens for extra attraction. It's a shrubby(sometimes vine) type of plant and evergreen. Produces lot of tinny violet flowers at a time.

This flowering plant belongs to the plant family Verbenaceae. It has several common names across the world, such as Pigeon Berry, Sky Flower, Golden Dew Drop, etc. Scientific name of the flower is Duranta erecta. But several synonyms available, such as Duranta repens, Duranta plumieri, Duranta ellisia.

These flowers are usually very small in size. Leafs are lens shaped and has a lovely foliage. Flowers are even smaller than the leafs. Color of the flower is light violet. It has five petals and the bottom two petals are having deep violet stripe at the middle. Center of the flower has a touch of golden color which can be a reason behind it's nomenclature.

This flower is not native to our country Bangladesh. We are just using this flowering plant at gardens. But it is recommended to keep the plant away from kids. Attractive colorful fruits from this plant is highly toxic.

Images were captured from Rangamati(রাঙামাটি) during July 2011. WikiPedia has some details about this flower.
