Share at Facebook

Rangan(রঙ্গন, Rugmini in Hindi) is an exotic bright red flower from Bangladesh. In our country, mainly the red one is seen frequently, but wide ranges of color is available outside. There are two different species are available having subtle difference. So Rongon(রঙ্গন) can be either Ixora Coccinea or Ixora Chinensis as botanical/scientific/latin name from Rubiaceae family.

Rongon Flower(রঙ্গন ফুল) used to bloom as a bunch at the top of branch. Each flower bunch comprises of lot of small red flowers. Each red flower has four petals and holds four yellow stamen(no filament) between the petals. Flower blooms more or less throughout the year, but best during the rainy season.

This flower plant used to be 4-6 feet tall on an average, but can reach up to 10-12 feet. The plant is shrubby and grows as a bush. People used to plant this tree at their garden for beautifying. It is possible to control the shape of this plant, and people used to give a nice looking shape by trimming the edges. Something like doing sculpture things over the plants.

Photos for this article were taken from my tour at Savar(সাভার), and Kushtia(কুষ্টিয়া) during April, and May of 2010 respectively. More detail of this Rangan flower is available at WikiPedia. This flower has few common names around the world. For example Jungle Geranium, Flame of the Woods, and Jungle Flame, etc. Possibly this is because it's viable red color.
