Keoo(কেও ফুল) is a perennial plant and common names for this flower in Indian territory are Keoo, Keu, Keukand, Kostu, Kemak, etc. Outside world knows this flower as Cheilocostus, Crepe Ginger, etc. This plant is indigenous to the Southeast Asia, but profoundly available inside the Bandarban hilly area of Bangladesh. Botanical name of this plant is Costus Speciosus and its from the family Zingiberaceae.
Costus speciosus used to grow somewhere between 3 feet to 8 feet depending upon the environment. Doesn't generate any brunch from the main stem. Flowers used to come at the top of the stem. Color of the flower is white and having yellow at the center of it. An individual flower has a trumpet shape. After the flowers are faded away, only the cone shaped red bracts are remain on the plant. In our territory, the blooming season is from August to October.
Mainly this is using as an ornamental plant at most places, but some places at India are cultivating for medical purposes. In Bangladesh, it is nothing but a Jungle Flower(জংলী ফুল). So far no report found about the invasive attitude of this plant.
The photos of this article were taken from Bandarban during my trekking at September 2010, just after the rainy season. More of this plant is available at Wikipedia.
