Beach Spider Lily(স্পাইডার লিলি) - Hymenocallis littoralis

Share at Facebook

This is the first time I have seen this flower at my last tour, Rangamati(রাঙামাটি). Found the flower at the rooftop balcony of a Hotel from there. This flower is called as Beach Spider Lily. Botanical name of the flower is Hymenocallis littoralis. This flower is from the family Amaryllidaceae. This is native to Mexico and Central America.

This perennial evergreen plant is very suitable for indoor ornamental plant. This plant can sustain in low sunlight. Flower used to bloom during summer to lat autumn, but require proper watering for perfect blooming. Plant is not that much taller, but the axis that generates from the flower can be taller and holds up to 4-6 flowers. Looks like a spider for long petals.

Spider Lily is a white flower and has spider like long petals. This looks something like the feet of a duck. The filament is stuck inside the petals and then extended further. It holds the yellow stamen at the top. The flower has an attractive fragrance, some people call this similar to vanilla.

This flower probably doesn't produce flower(my conjecture). So the plant usually propagates using the bulb. By separating a mature bulb, you can easily grow a new plant.

It was a moonlight night of a rainy day. After the dinner, just wandering at the rooftop, and enjoying the cloudy full moon. Suddenly found this flower at the corner of the roof. Just captured few shots so that I can identify the flower after returning back to Dhaka.
