After visiting the Rupban Mura (রুপবান মুড়া), we were heading towards the famous Moynamoti of Comilla (ময়নামতি, কুমিল্লা). We have hired a battery driven auto rickshaw. It was a very short drive as it was very near from there.
About Shalban Bihar (শালবন বিহার):
This site previously was known as Salban Rajar bari (শালবন রাজার বাড়ী), in English which means the house of Shalban's King. But after the excavation a ground plan of a Buddhist monastery (measuring 550'x500') with 115 monastic cells was exposed. After that it is now popularly known as Salban Vihara (শালবন বিহার). A dominant central shrine and its monumental gate way on the north is its special attraction.
From one of the terracotta sealing, we came to know this monastery was built by Sri Bhava Deva (শ্রী ভব দেব), the 4th ruler of the early Deva dynasty during mid 8th century A.D.; So during its hey-day it was called Bhava Deva Maha Vihara (ভব দেব মহা বিহার). The antiquities recovered during the excavation are now displayed in the Maynamati Museum (ময়নামতি জাদুঘর).
How to reach at Shalban Bihar (শালবন বিহার):
First you have to come to Comilla. You can reach at Comilla (কুমিল্লা) by bus or train. Its around 2 hours bus or train journey. I have gone there by bus. From my experience, Asia Lines and Tisha are the two affordable transport facilities that you can use. It will cost you 110 taka per person. But if you bargain, that case you can make it 100 Taka.
The final destination of the bus is Comilla (কুমিল্লা) town, but it will be better for you to get down at Comilla Cantonment (কুমিল্লা ক্যান্টনমেন্ট). Cause its nearer from Comilla Cantonment (কুমিল্লা ক্যান্টনমেন্ট) rather than Comilla (কুমিল্লা) town. Take a CNG/battery driven auto rickshaw to reach near the Moynamoti (ময়নামতি) from there.
To enter the Shalban Bihar (শালবন বিহার), you'll require to buy a ticket. It will cost you 10 Taka per person. You can enjoy your time until the time is up. Its a picnic spot, and lot of students from different schools are gathering here as a purpose of study tour.
Maynamati Museum (ময়নামতি জাদুঘর):
Beside the Shalban Bihara (শালবন বিহার), you'll find a museum affluent with collection from the excavation of the Archeological sites. Like other museum, you are not allowed to use any Camera inside. You have to buy a ticket to enter the Museum. Each person will cost 10 Taka. We have there only for five minutes as we were running out of time!
